An unhealthy gut is linked to various conditions affecting the heart, immune system, brain, and skin. It has also been linked to inflammation, a precursor to cancer. Here are four signs of an unhealthy gut:

1. Stomach upsets. Regular stomach discomfort that features bloating, diarrhea, or gas can indicate irritable bowel disease. Imbalances in the gut bacteria cause this.

2. Fatigue. Studies have found that imbalances in the bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms (microbiome) in the gut can lead to chronic fatigue.

3. Strong sugar cravings. A diet rich in refined carbohydrates and sugar can cause a decrease in good bacteria in the gut. This unbalances the gut microbiome leading to stronger sugar cravings.

4. Skin conditions. Researchers have found a link between gut inflammation and skin conditions like eczema, acne, and psoriasis.

A healthy gut is critical to good health overall. Some ways to improve gut health include eating a healthy diet with less processed foods and lots of vegetables drinking plenty of water and lowering stress.
